THE SATURDAY CITY: HANOI, VIETNAM

The capital of Vietnam, Hanoi is located in the north of the country. Crowded (pop. 6,000,000+), a little polluted, and slightly run-down, it nonetheless is very quaint.

Though I did not like Vietnam, I liked Hanoi. A lot. I thought it had a certain charm to it.

WHY I’LL NEVER RETURN TO VIETNAM

Back in 2007, I took a trip to Vietnam. Upon leaving, I swore I’d never go back. The only way I’ll give this place a second chance is if I meet a girl who really wants to go to Vietnam or if some business trip takes me there.

You’ve probably seen it in the background of countless war movies, but nothing can prepare you for the epic beauty of Vietnam. While it isn’t my favorite country in the world, it is very beautiful and there is no denying that.

Ajisai Viewing in Kamakura

Today I headed out to Kamakura to visit a few temples famous for their hydrangea flowers. Hydrangea are called ajisai in Japanese, and typically bloom from around mid-June to mid-July, which coincides with the rainy season.

This year, they have started blooming over a week early, so already the popular viewing spots are getting crowded. I visited three spots to check out the status of the blossoms and the crowds, starting with Hasedera Temple.
